Business Valuations for Separation & Divorce

Fair outcomes start with clear value.

In the context of separation or divorce, accurately valuing a business is critical to achieving a fair property settlement. Whether one or both parties have an interest in the business, independent valuation provides transparency and reduces the risk of future disputes. At Marsh & Partners, we deliver impartial, detailed valuations that are suitable for negotiation, mediation, or family court proceedings.

Our valuations meet the standards required under the Family Law Act and offer clarity to solicitors, accountants, and both parties involved in the separation.

How We Can Help

We provide a structured and independent valuation process that supports equitable division of business assets:

We assess the risk and value drivers that impact the business within the context of separation. This helps to understand what influences the business’s worth and future earning potential post-settlement.

We review historical financials to evaluate business performance and identify the ongoing financial benefit to either party, supporting the accurate assessment of income and value.

We compare the business to others in the industry to provide a fair market valuation that reflects its competitive position, especially important when the business is to be retained or sold as part of the settlement.

We evaluate how the business is positioned in terms of growth, sustainability, and any vulnerabilities that may affect future value or ownership considerations.

We provide a comprehensive, court-compliant valuation report that supports family law negotiations and stands up to scrutiny in court proceedings.

Where one party will continue to operate the business post-divorce, we can provide guidance on improving value, addressing financial weaknesses, and planning for sustainable performance.

How do valuers figure out how much a business is worth?

Valuing a business is complex. There are many factors that affect the value (and marketability) of a business. One determinant of value is your current and recent profit history. However, profit is only a starting point. Less tangible factors such as customer relationships, business risk, intellectual property, the legal and regulatory environment and future potential of the business are also major considerations. Added to this, the exact process and factors assessed can differ depending on the particular market and industry sector. Find out some of the things we take into account in this short video.

What our clients have to say….

We work with motivated clients to improve their businesses and grow their wealth

My wife and I have used the services of Marsh & Partners for over 30 years and our children have also followed suit. We are an average middle income couple, and they have always treated us with great respect and professionalism. Marsh & Partners for us has been the difference between an average retirement and one which holds no fears. Their tax advice and property structuring has been. extremely solid. Our son utilises Marsh & Partners Business Improvement services to assist forward planning in his business, which has been extremely successful. Their integrity is beyond reproach and we have no hesitation in recommending them.
